The Red Alert Story
The Red Alert Story.
EPILOGUE The Allies knew of the Soviet plans to create what was dubbed as 'The Iron Curtain', a device to bolster the strength of a unit for a short period of time to such an extent that it appeared invulnerable to attack. As Jack had witnessed at first hand, the Iron Curtain was indeed successful in its trials with Mammoth tanks, and it was not long before the prototype Iron Curtain was upgraded into the real thing, capable of rendering several units impervious to enemy gunfire. The Allies launched their second wave, against the silos, and, timed to perfection, the Soviets launched their secret counter attack. The Iron Curtain was deployed on the silos long enough for the missiles to be launched by means of an off-site forward command post. All the Allies could do was watch as wave after wave of units attacked and failed in their missions to destroy the silos and their precious cargo. All in all, seven of the most powerful nuclear missiles ever to have been created were launched before the effects of the Iron Curtain subsided and the remaining missiles destroyed. As a result, seven of Western Europe's most powerful cities were crushed, leaving their few survivors to endure the following radiation over the near future. London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Bern, Rome and Strasbourg lost some 75% of their respective populations and buildings. Political leaders were vaporised without warning, leaving those left of any rank to surrender unconditionally to the continually advancing Soviet forces. Over the years, Stalin's Empire spanned over Europe and most of Asia. The conflict between Japan and USA was resolved and the War to end all Wars officially ended. Those able to speak up against the new regime were given no opportunity to do so, and Stalin's New Age dawned. Communism spread across the world reaching countries as far away as Cuba. Those who opposed Communism lived under the shadow of a nuclear threat - a threat enforced by the arsenal of weaponry Stalin had directed at key locations around the world. For many years, the Cold War of political stand-off became accepted. Those in the 'Free World' accepted they had not the manpower nor the resources to 'dissuade' the Soviet Union to drop their communist stance, and began to return to everyday life. The threat of a new war became less and less significant in the eyes of the public who believed that the War to end all Wars had done just that. They were free, others were communist. That was that, what was done could not be undone. Those under his regime accepted they had no choice but to live as best as they could under the communist regime. Support grew for communism amongst those within the Union, for this segment of the public too believed that the war was over and that they should make the best of their situation. One group of political refugees, however, never gave up hope of returning to their homeland as free men, able to live as they had done, without, as they saw it, the menace of communism. They were the GDI. Support for the GDI grew and resistance groups came out of hiding and joined the army of anti-Stalin protestors. Stalin dismissed the GDI as a powerless organisation of propaganda and no actions. One man, however, stood out as an credible opponent to Stalin. He was not a politician. He was not a military officer. He was a priest, so he saw himself, who led a religion of extreme cult status known as NOD. His was known as Kane. Kane entered into diplomacy as a way to annex a degree of power from Stalin and during one secret meeting with the Soviet superior, the War to end all Wars re-ignited. Kane murdered Stalin and declared war on GDI with one clear aim - to Command and Conquer the world. |
